TRACK: Uprising
YEAR: 2009
DIRECTOR: Hydra
GENRE: Alternative rock

AUDIENCE: 15-30 m/f

LYRICS

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT:
The band performing in the miniature truck
The band performs through a miniature city in a small truck, with a lit fuse behind them. They are also seen performing inside a burning trailer.Through the window of a TV shop the band looks at a group of TVs all with teddy bears on the screens and the lead singer smashes the window and the TVs with his guitar. At the end of the video, a group of evil looking teddy bears rise up from the ground and start destroying the miniature city. The band appears to drive out of the miniature city before the fuse catches them.
overhead shot of the band

PERFORMANCE STYLE:
In the video there are scenes of the band performing inter cut with the narrative of the video. In the scenes where the band are performing, there are a lot of overhead shots, particularly of the drummer.

the miniature trailer

LOCATION/S + MISE-EN-SCENE:
There is only one location throughout the whole video, a miniature city. The band is seen performing in the back of a small pick-up truck, and in a trailer.

bears destroying the miniature city

INTERTEXTUALITY:
At the end of the video a group of teddy bears destroy the miniature city. This is said to pay homage to the climactic scene in Ghostbusters.

Minivid: Editing

As i have used Final Cut Pro previously, i didn't have too much trouble with basic editing. As i was editing a music video I had more freedom to use effect and different transitions. The first one i tried was using the mirror effect.  I used this on a shot of Jake lip-syncing and I thought it looked quite effective. I also used another effect on the shot to give it a more stylised look.
I knew that i wanted to layer shots of Jake lip-syncing over the main narrative. As i had used layering in my AS coursework production, i didn't find this too difficult.
I also used reverse in my edit to add something to the music video and break up long takes, so I used the retime option and set it to reverse. I didn't find this very difficult, although it was hard to get it to correspond with the song.
I used a number of effects from the light section of the "Effects" tab.  i think the most effective one was 'Intro Flashes' because it looked very effective and fit in with the timing of the song.
I used the Transitions tab and the transition 'Lens Flare' at the end of the video so there wasn't just a blunt 'black screen' ending. I thought it looked quite effective and fit in well with the timing of the song.

ClassVid Pitch: Rebecca Black: Friday

ACT: Rebecca Black
TRACK: Friday
YEAR: 2011
GENRE: Teen pop

Original Music Video:

The song that I have chosen is Friday by Rebecca Black, because I think it would be quite fun to film as a group, and this track is very popular with people making remakes and parodies. My idea would follow the almost the same narrative as the original video, however instead of having a female lead role it would be a male, to make it more comical. It would be easy to film as there are less than 3 locations in the original video.
However, we would have to change one location as it is in a convertible car, so we could change it to a classroom or another location within school so it is easier to film.
Also there is a group of 5 friends in the original video so there would be no need for a large cast. The costumes wouldn't need much preparation as it is just normal clothes, and there wouldn't be any special props required. In the video there is lipsyncing all the way through, and again to make this version more comical we would use a male instead of a female.

EG2: Oasis - Wonderwall

ACT: Oasis
TRACK: Wonderwall
YEAR: 1995
DIRECTOR: Nigel Dick
GENRE: Britpop
AUDIENCE: 15-30, M+F

VIDEO:

LYRICS

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS
shot of whole band
There isn't a direct connection between the lyrics and the visuals. There are mainly shots of the band and the lead singer Liam Gallagher looking down into the camera, and this could create a connection with the audience as some of the songs main lyrics are "maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me"

a record with the band name is shown
at the beginning
GENRE CHARACTERISTICS
The genre of this song is britpop, and this music video contains some genre stereotypes. Typically britpop songs were mainly about the music so there was usually no narrative, only the band playing instruments and singing.

INTERTEXTUALITY
The song's title was appropriated from Wonderwall, a 1968 film. The film is about a man who becomes obsessed with a girl. The meaning of wonderwall is that person that you are constantly thinking of, someone who your are completely fascinated with, and the songs lyrics 'you're my wonderwall' enforce this idea.
performance footage

PERFORMANCE STYLE
kaleidoscope effect
layering

Because this music video has no real narrative, it is mainly built up of performance footage and lip-syncing. However, there are effects which have been used to make the shots of the band and the lead singer less boring, such as a kaleidoscope effect and layering.

There is also use of duplicating single shots throughout the whole video, particularly in the chorus.

LOOKING/MODE OF ADDRESS:
the lead singer looking through
a mirror

Most of the shots are of the lead singer looking directly into the camera and lip-syncing. However, there is one shot where he is looking through a mirror into the camera

My Track Choice

Madonna - Vogue

Mini-Vid Task Explained

The final outcome will be a partial music video of at least 30 seconds in length, maximum 60 seconds.

The aims are:
  • To advance your understanding of the factors behind track selection
  • To provide practise at pitching
  • To provide a sense of scale: a music video production is more demanding than a film opening
  • To priovide opportunities for editing experimentation and creative expression
  • To deepen your familiarity with FCProX tools
  • Generating significant evidence on several A2 coursework assessment criteria
